Following the Beijing Coup in 1924, Feng Yuxiangremoved the official status of the towers, replacing them with western time-keeping methods, and renamed the building "Mingchilou", or the "tower of clarifying shame". Objects related to the Eight-Nation Alliance's invasion of Beijing and later the May 30 Massacre of 1925 were put on display, turning the towers into a museum. The upper story of the building currently serves as the People's Cultural Hall of the East City District.

Regularly voted Beijing's best student bar since it's based in the heartland of Beijing's universities. It is a little taste of home for foreign students studying abroad in China. I think most newbies to Beijing make most of their expat friends here. It is a great place to network and meet people thanks to all the social nights Lush hosts, including Karaoke, Trivia, Open Mic, Live Gigs etc. All nationalities gather here. The younger Chinese studying nearby hang here and enjoy Karaoke very much. Expats typically come from Denmark, America, Canada, Italy, Germany, Australia, Belgium, Serbia, France, the Netherlands, the Philippines, Russia, Ireland and the UK.
They have some of the better servers as well who understand what good customer service is. If there is an issue they will endeavour to correct it, without charge, which you might struggle to find at other bars. Beautiful atmosphere in this family run hostel. They place is old (and that's part of the charm) but kept impeccable. The staff is super helpful and friendly. This is the first hostel where my laundry felt truly clean and not just passed thru water. The rooms with windows outside can be very loud in the early morning as the life in the hutong picks up. If you are a light sleeper ask for an inner room. I think they don't have windows to the outside (only to the courtyard) but it will be quieter. Despite Google maps being out of date, this bar still exists. And it’s a lovely bar. I speak terrible Chinese (ie none) but the staff speak good English. They were very attentive. The local draught beer which they have tastes like an IPA, was great and not a bad price. Wife had a European Sauvignon, which killed off the savings made on the draught beer. Nous sommes allés voir l’opéra mercredi dernier et nous avons été très déçus. Dernier soir à Pékin, c’était un rêve d’enfance, nous avons réservé nos billets avec theatrebeijing qui nous a promis des sous titre en anglais. Побывал на Пекинской опере.
Сначала помощь тем, кто собирается туда. Если вы покупаете через трип.ком, вам нужно зайти в сам отель и уйти в левое крыло. Там напротив телефонов комната, в которой вам выдадут бумажные билеты.
Имейте в виду, что часть мест в зале -как в любой Российской опере - сиденья в ряд, а часть несколько неожиданно ... Самые дорогие - это отдельные столики. Те, которые чуть дешевле самых дорогих - тоже столики на 6 человек, но если вы не вшестером одной компанией, то будете сидеть с кем то ещё.

Мы сначала немного опешили от такого способа оперу смотреть, но это же местная традиция, поэтому пили чай.
До начала представления на сцене сидел один из актёров и наносил грим, потом его одевали. Интересно было посмотреть. Фотографировали. Там вообще можно снимать видео в любое время, в отличие от наших опер.
Про саму оперу.
Есть субтитры на китайском и английском. Читать успевали и даже переводить непонятные слова.
Опера из трёх действий. Действия не связаны друг с другом. Просто три независимые истории.
В целом опера не хуже и не лучше Российской. Это просто другое.
Костюмы отличные. Музыка необычная. Какие то китайские инструменты.
Хореография у нас лучше, но опять же, это просто другое.

Finally a place that serves legit pho in China! I'll get to that in just a bit.
We visited 4Corners twice last weekend; first for dinner/drinks and the next day again for a late lunch. That particular night the place was packed because there was a live band playing - pop song covers with a swing twist; pretty interesting! - so we had to wait a bit for a table. We sat outside in their lovely courtyard, where the tree branches open just enough to see the sky - this is Beijing, don't expect to see stars. We ordered a chicken curry dish - I ordered it with noodles and my husband ordered it with rice; much better with rice!. We also ordered the spicy wings; they were good, but we've had better. The next day he ordered the Namburger - he said it was okay - and I had the pho with flank steak, which we both agreed was ON POINT. Drinks are plentiful and decently priced - some of the beers may or may not be cold enough - and they have some beers on tap from a local brewery which are pretty good. Wonderful food & bar in the Ya'er Hutong about 10 mins walk from Houhai Lake. Drinks and beer are nice and the food is tasty. Taste like real Vietnamese which wifey and I welcomed after 9 days of only having Chinese cuisine. Great staff and tasty food.
